Happy to Be Here
I don't know what we've done to deserve this incredible fall in Michigan, but I am certainly not complaining. Day after day, we've had clear blue skies, sunshine, temperatures in the upper 60s, and barely a breath of wind. The evenings have been cool and crisp, and the changing leaves have been spectacular.
I've been trying to soak up every minute of it.
There have been walks with friends, runs, bike rides, and time at the cottage with fires in the fireplace. Steve and I walked to a live recording of Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! We made a big pot of chili and happily ate it all week. Nothing particularly extraordinary, but somehow these past few weeks have felt pretty wonderful.
And it's made me think about how much of what makes life good happens in the most ordinary moments.
We spend so much time looking forward to the next big thing. A vacation, a holiday, a special occasion, or something we've been planning for months. I certainly love having things to look forward to. But lately, I've been reminded that some of the very best parts of life happen on the days when there's nothing particularly special on the calendar.
A walk with a friend that turns into a great conversation. Coming home after a bike ride feeling tired and happy. Sitting by a fire on a cool evening. Having dinner already made because there's still chili in the refrigerator.
None of these moments is remarkable on its own, but together they make up so much of what I love about my life.
I think there's something valuable in occasionally checking in with ourselves and noticing what's making us happy right now. Not what we're working toward or hoping will happen next, but what's already here.
Of course, not every season of life feels this easy or beautiful. There are times when simply getting through an ordinary day takes everything we have. But perhaps that makes it even more important to appreciate the moments when life feels good, without needing them to be anything more than they are.
Before long, the leaves will fall, the temperatures will drop, and Michigan will remind us that winter is coming. But for now, I'm enjoying every beautiful day we're getting.
And I'm feeling especially grateful for the little things that make me so happy to be here.
